Homework: Rewrite of Mock Essay in MLA format

Your homework for next Tuesday is to rewrite the mock essay! Remember mock means: to treat with ridicule. I do not want to see any serious essay subjects and no real reference in the Works Cited page, just invented references in the right MLA format. You need to make sure you have: • Short (direct) quotation • Long (direct) quotation (correctly placed into a “quote block”) • Paraphrase from an outside source • An introduction with a hook, background information, and an underlined thesis statement • Works Cited page using the correct MLA format—should include a citations from at least four sources—one website, one book, one newspaper or magazine article, and one online database. If you are not sure about how to format your paper then please go to  Perdue Owl's section on MLA format  to check how it should be formatted. They have a vidcast that you can find  here. I expect them to be printed and submitted on Tuesday! Good Luck!

How to write a Movie Review

Your homework for next Sunday will be to write a movie review on Persepolis. COMPONENTS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR REVIEW Title of the film or documentary:  Be sure to name the film in your first paragraph. State the date of its release. Summary:  What happened in this film? As a reviewer, you must explain what happened in the film and express your opinion about the success or failure of the film maker’s creation. Don’t be afraid to express your opinion, but include specific reasons for likes and dislikes. You can’t say “it was boring” unless you provide justification. Filmmaker/Author of the book the movie is based on:  You should do a little research on the person who created this film or wrote the book. Is the director or writer a controversial figure? Is the film maker or author known for a political stance? Does the film maker have a significant background? If the film maker is known for controversy, this segment of your paper can be lengthy. Happy Spring (Vernal) Equinox!

On the two equinoxes every year the Sun shines directly on the Equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal – but not exactly. The September equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator – from north to south and vice versa in March. Check out this video about a discovery that was made on a Spring Equinox day, about the Pyramids of Giza:

New Banksy Murals Pay Homage to Basquiat

The new murals coincide with the opening on Thursday of Basquiat: Boom for Real at the Barbican Centre, the artist’s first major exhibition in the UK. Though Basquiat died when he was just 27, many cite his work as a street artist — scrawling the distinctive “SAMO” tag, often accompanied by short poems, on buildings in Lower Manhattan — as a key component in the development of his Neo-Expressionist painting style. PHOTOS: Children Caught In The Crossfire Of Rohingya Crisis

"Nearly 400,000 Rohingya people have fled government violence in Myanmar and crossed into neighboring Bangladesh. The majority of them are children — 60 percent, by U.N. estimates. And at least 1,100 are separated from their parents.   The challenges for aid groups are unfathomable with a refugee crisis this large, caused by what Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, says seems to be "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing."" Full article  here. The United Nations high commissioner for human rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein says the Rohingya crisis seems to be caused by "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing." The situation is even more daunting when so many children are at risk. They are vulnerable to physical illnesses like waterborne diseases and skin infections — and mental health problems spurred by trauma. They've been shot at and they've trekked across areas with land mines.

Mock essay guidlines: Create a “Mock Essay” similar to the example here (on ANY topic of your choice) in which you MAKE UP sources, quotations, etc. (no real research required). Be sure on page two that you have your last name and page number in a header in the upper right-hand corner. It shoul...

Mauritius aka Dina Arobi

For those asking themselves where I come from, this is a coverage done by CNN about Mauritius, click  here . Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean known to be a slave post for the French, then the British. This violent colonial past is what gave birth to our creole culture, our music and dancing style a direct result of our ancestors being in shackles. Another short video about slaves in Mauritius can be found  here.  If none of that is interesting to you then check out the eye candy below:

The Lebanese Scientist Saving The Sharks of The Middle East

"Pop culture has not helped the plight of sharks. While movies like Jaws and Open Water cast them as bloodthirsty monsters, Jabado, 38, tries to educate people about sharks’ vital role in ocean ecology. Oceana’s landmark 2008 study, Predators as Prey: Why Healthy Oceans Need Sharks, revealed how apex predators like sharks maintain a crucial balance in marine ecosystems by limiting their prey populations, which do the same for species below them in the food chain, and how emptying oceans of their populations “can have unpredictable and devastating consequences.”"  Full article here.
